How BTS Was Formed

The story of Bangtan Sonyeondan (Bulletproof Boy Scouts) officially began on 13 June 2013, following three years of rigorous training and preparation. Their first performance took place at M Countdown Mnet the day after the release of their single album, 2 Cool 4 Skool, allegedly to fill a spot left vacant by another group’s cancellation. They performed for an audience that included the first dozen fans gained through their pre-debut YouTube vlogs, features with other artists and mixtapes published on SoundCloud.

Meet the Author

Danielle Khoury, scholar of Italian literature and BTS philosophy

Danielle Khoury

Danielle Khoury is an ARMY, poet, and scholar standing at the intersection of Italian literature and modern Asian storytelling. Writing in four languages, her work is deeply rooted in BTS psychology themes and the cultural impact of the global ARMY community.

Moving beyond surface observation, she delves into BTS philosophy as a lived practice centered on compassion and collective care. Following a personal loss, Danielle identified recurring Jungian themes—shadow, light, transformation—within the band’s discography.

In her debut, BTS: Beneath The Surface, she offers a profound BTS analysis, bridging scholarly insight with accessible storytelling.

Meet the illustrator

Rebecca Barron

Rebecca Barron is an art educator and creative contributor at Daechyeong Press, with a specialist interest in Korean and Japanese art history and Asian philosophy. Her work brings cross-cultural depth and intellectual richness to the publishing vision of Daechyeong Press.

For BTS: Beneath The Surface, Rebecca approached the illustrations as a parallel text, drawing on the Korean philosophical framework of 음양 (eum-yang/duality), layered with 한 (han), 정 (jeong), and 흥 (heung) where appropriate. The artwork blends culturally relevant motifs with eum-yang symbolism, capturing its dynamic interplay and mirroring the process of individuation central to the themes explored by Daechyeong Press.

For Rebecca, this project was deeply personal — a reminder that BTS’s story speaks to something universal in all of us, regardless of background or culture. This collaboration under Daechyeong Press has inspired a new direction in her creative practice, deepening her commitment to art rooted in cross-cultural philosophy, storytelling, and meaningful visual narrative.
